Biography

Vanessa Gandar is a photographer and visual artist. Born in 1982, she is graduated in 2005 with a National Superior Diploma of Plastic Studies in Art at the Ecole Supérieure d’Art de Lorraine in Metz (Fr). Since then she lives and works all over the world.

She has held numerous exhibitions, has benefited from residencies in France and abroad and has obtained several research and creation scholarships. She has often been invited to share her work and field experiences during workshops, educational activities and public demonstrations.

After co-founding and co-directing the TATA Galerie in 2017, a mobile art gallery in a sea container, in 2018 she took over the artistic direction of the associative gallery Octave Cowbell from Metz, through which “we enter by the window”, with the mission to spread the young contemporary creation.

In her artistic work, she makes territories that she crosses her open-air studio. Her photographs, with a minimal and contemplative aesthetic, show sublime landscapes, devoid of the beings that populate them. By inhabiting these great spaces, by vibrating with the natural phenomena in presence, she reaffirms the experience of what makes our presence on the surface of a fragile world. More recently, her travels have led her to develop research inspired by science and “stories” by associating with her photographs a corpus of elements that constitute an alternative and empirical reading of the laws of the Earth and the cosmos. She collects, draws, writes, arranges or recomposes in this way archival documents, cartographies, natural, mineral and vegetal fragments in order to constitute new and empirical lines of understanding of the forces that punctuate geological time and the future of our senses.
